Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after I get in touch?

Once you contact me, we can arrange a free 15-minute consultation. This gives us a chance to speak briefly about what has brought you to therapy, answer any questions you may have and get an initial sense of whether working together might feel right.

If you decide you would like to continue, we can then arrange your first full session.

What happens in the first session?

The first session gives us time to begin getting to know each other and to talk about what has brought you to therapy.

I may ask a little about what is happening in your life now, any relevant background information and what you might be hoping for from counselling. There is no expectation to tell me everything straight away.

Do I need to prepare for my first session?

No. You don’t need to prepare anything or know exactly what you want to say.

You can simply come as you are. We can begin with whatever feels most important or most present for you at the time.

How long might I be in therapy for?

There is no fixed length of time. Some people come for a shorter period, while others value longer-term therapy.

We can review the work together as it develops and talk openly about how therapy is feeling for you.

What happens if I need to cancel or rearrange a session?

I understand that sometimes things happen and plans need to change. If you need to cancel or rearrange a session, I ask that you give me as much notice as possible.

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged at 50% of the session fee. Last-minute cancellations and missed sessions without notice are charged at the full session fee.

If I need to cancel or rearrange a session, I will aim to give you as much notice as possible and, where I can, offer an alternative appointment. I will also give you advance notice of any planned time away from my practice.

What if I’m unsure whether we’re a good fit?

The relationship you have with your therapist matters, and sometimes it takes a little time to know whether someone feels right for you.

The free 15-minute consultation gives you an opportunity to get an initial sense of me before deciding whether to book a first session. If you do begin therapy, you are not committing yourself to a fixed course of sessions. We can talk openly about how the work is feeling as we go, and you are always free to pause or end therapy if it no longer feels right for you.
